Chandigarh, April 12, 2024: The Panjab University’s Department of Statistics organized two special lectures on the topics: “All models are wrong, but some are useful”, Are we ‘focused’ while selecting this ‘useful’ model? ‘Focused’ model selection for dependent data”; and “Time Series Forecasting: From Statistical Models to Machine Learning Algorithms”.
The Resource Person, Prof. T.V. Ramanathan was from Department of Statistics and Centre for Advanced Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University (Formerly University of Pune) on April 12, 2024 in the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The lectures focused on the selection of time series models. By prioritizing models that strike a balance between accuracy and feasibility, practitioners can steer clear of overfitting while maximizing the utility of their analyses. Finally these are compared with machine learning and deep learning models which are in discussion and very useful in real life problems related to clinical trials, agricultural experiments, industrial experiments and other areas of research. The speaker started the lecture from basics and then discussed advance problems in the mentioned research area.

All of the Faculty Members, Research Scholars and Postgraduate students of the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh attended the same. The lecture was coordinated by Professor Narinder Kumar, Chairperson of the Department of Statistics.
