Chandigarh, September 16, 2026: The Centre for Public Health, Panjab University, trained mess workers and students in food hygiene and safe handling practices at a health talk held at the International Girls Hostel, Sector 25, Chandigarh, as part of its community outreach programme.
The event was graced by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma, Chairperson, Centre for Public Health and attended by Col. (Dr.) Bhumesh Dhadwal, Faculty, Centre for Public Health.
The talk was delivered by MPH 2nd Year students, Centre for Public Health, Sukhmeet Kaur and Dr. Sakshi Sharma, who presented insights into food hygiene, worker safety and safe food-handling practices, with particular emphasis on practical protocols for mess kitchens and hostel dining facilities.
Sukhmeet Kaur delivered the first part of the talk, focusing on the essentials of food hygiene and worker safety. She elaborated on personal grooming and hygiene, including uniform standards and hand hygiene, and demonstrated the SUMAN-K 6-step handwashing technique for effective hand hygiene. She also discussed food and mess-worker safety, covering the use of personal protective equipment, wound care and respiratory hygiene, along with FSSAI rules and regulations. On kitchen hygiene, she addressed sanitation, lighting, pest control, the separation of raw and cooked food, water quality, and the regular maintenance of water purifiers.
The key focus of the second part was proper food storage practice, delivered by Dr. Sakshi Sharma, covering pantry management, the safe storage of raw and cooked food, and the two-hour rule. She also emphasised safe cooking practices and the protocol to be followed during illness, including reporting mechanisms and periodic health check-ups.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion involving food handlers, hostel staff and students, during which all queries were addressed to their satisfaction.
