Panjab University Inaugurate Hindi Fortnight with Poetry Recitation Competition

Chandigarh, September 14, 2026: The Department of Hindi, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, commenced the Hindi Fortnight, being organised from September 14 to 28, 2026, on the occasion of Hindi Day.
The fortnight began with an inaugural ceremony followed by a poetry recitation competition on September 14. Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Chandigarh, Dr. Harpreet Kaur presided over the programme. Following the inaugural ceremony, a poetry recitation competition was organised in which 15 participants from various departments of PU and its affiliated colleges took part. The participants presented poems representing diverse traditions of Hindi poetry, contemporary sensibilities, social concerns and human values.
Presiding over the programme, Dr. Harpreet Kaur spoke about the breadth of the Hindi language and its relevance in contemporary contexts. She said that appreciation for Hindi should not remain limited to formal events but should also find expression in everyday life, education and creative expression. Encouraging the participants, she observed that poetry is a powerful medium for giving voice to human emotions.
Chairperson, Department of Hindi, Prof. Ashok Kumar proposed the vote of thanks to the guests, participants, judges and all those associated with the organisation of the programme. He said that the various activities being organised during the Hindi Fortnight aim to generate interest in Hindi among students and young people while promoting the creative and practical aspects of the language.
Earlier, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, Dr. Vinod Kumar welcomed the guests, participants and students. He highlighted the relevance of Hindi Day and Hindi Fortnight, stating that Hindi is not merely a medium of expression but also a strong link connecting India's diverse linguistic and cultural traditions. He added that such programmes help develop students' interest in the Hindi language and literature while encouraging creativity.
The Department of Hindi will organise various linguistic, literary and creative competitions and programmes during the remaining days of the Hindi Fortnight.
