Panjab University IAS Centre organises special lecture on UPSC-oriented newspaper reading

Chandigarh, September 24, 2026: The Centre for IAS & Other Competitive Examinations, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a special lecture titled “Decoding the Daily: How to Read the News the UPSC Way” at the IAS Centre, Panjab University, to equip civil services aspirants with practical strategies for effective newspaper reading and current affairs preparation.
The lecture was delivered by Ivinderpal Singh, Deputy News Editor, The Tribune, who shared practical insights into understanding news, assessing its significance and analysing it from the perspective of the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Singh explained the importance of identifying examination-relevant developments, distinguishing facts from opinions and making effective use of key sections of newspapers, particularly the editorial and national pages. He also emphasised the 5Ws and 1H approach, covering Who, What, When, Where, Why and How, as a useful framework for comprehensively understanding a news report.
The session focused on helping aspirants move beyond routine newspaper reading and develop a structured approach to connecting current events with issues relevant to the civil services examination. The discussion also highlighted the importance of clarity, relevance and analytical understanding while preparing current affairs.
The programme was organised under the guidance of Prof. Meenakshi Goyal, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University and Chief Patron. Prof. Jyoti Rattan, Honorary Director, Centre for IAS & Other Competitive Examinations, and Prof. Madhuri Rishi, Coordinator, were also present on the occasion.
