Chandigarh, April 20, 2026: Panjab University's (PU) Punjabi Sahit Sabha, School of Punjabi Studies in collaboration with the Punjabi Sahit Academy, organised a seminar on Nirmal Jaswal’s short story collection Burning Snow under the theme “One Book: One Dialogue.”
President of the Punjabi Sahit Academy, Ludhiana, Dr. Sarabjit Singh delivered the welcome address and outlined the Academy’s literary initiatives. Dr. Paramjit Kaur Sidhu conducted the proceedings and introduced Jaswal’s narrative concerns, noting that her writing engages with broader social realities beyond questions of identity and is marked by a direct and candid style.
Two research papers were presented. Dr. Jatinder Singh examined the distinctiveness of contemporary Punjabi short fiction within its larger literary tradition, situating Jaswal’s work within social and historical contexts. Writer Jasvir Rana presented a detailed analysis of the collection, highlighting its engagement with contemporary human concerns and Jaswal’s political awareness in addressing social themes.
Writer Jatinder Hans initiated the discussion, focusing on the creative strengths of the stories. Dr. Baljit Kaur, Assistant Professor, Department of French, presented a sociolinguistic reading of the story Vampire. The session was presided over by Head of the Punjabi Department, Prof. Yograj  who described Jaswal as a representative voice of the third generation of Punjabi short story writers, with narratives shaped by lived experiences.
Faculty members including Prof. Akvinder Kaur Tanvi and Ravi Kumar, along with writers Paramjit Singh Maan, Pal Ajnavi, Avtar Singh Patang, Parminder Kaur, Ghazalgo Gul, and students and research scholars attended the seminar.
