Opening of nuclear industry to private sector would be disastrous: IDPD
Demands withdrawal of this move
Ludhiana, December 13, 2025: Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has issued a statement warning that the privatization of the nuclear industry could have disastrous consequences. The organization highlighted that the nuclear sector is already fraught with numerous risks, and many countries around the world are now shifting toward renewable energy resources instead of relying on nuclear power. The management of nuclear facilities and the disposal of nuclear waste currently have no foolproof methods, making the sector particularly vulnerable.
IDPD emphasized that privatization of the nuclear industry would not only introduce significant security risks but also pose serious health hazards. The private sector’s primary motive is profit, leaving little room for national interest in such a critical area. The organization cited recent instances, such as the Indigo crisis, as examples of how privatization can impact the entire country.
Dr. Arun Mitra, President, and Dr. Shakeel Ur Rahman, General Secretary of IDPD, have appealed to the Government of India to revoke its decision to allow private sector involvement in the nuclear industry, urging caution to protect both public safety and national security.
