Nurpur Police Bust Drug Smuggling Attempt; Shimla Man Held with 1.256 kg Charas, ₹1 Lakh Cash
In a major act against drug trafficking, the Police District Nurpur has arrested a Shimla resident and seized over 1.25 kg of charas along with ₹1 lakh in cash during a naka operation on National Highway-154.
Dharamshala, April 7, 2026: In a major act against drug trafficking, the Police District Nurpur has arrested a Shimla resident and seized over 1.25 kg of charas along with ₹1 lakh in cash during a naka operation on National Highway-154.
According to Superintendent of Police Kulbhushan Verma, in the late Monday evening around 8:55 PM when a team from Kandwal Police Post was conducting routine checking on the Mandi–Pathankot highway near Kandwal. During the naka, a black Hyundai Creta coming from Jassur side raised suspicion after the driver attempted to abruptly turn back on spotting the police.
Acting swiftly, the police team intercepted and surrounded the vehicle. A thorough search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses led to the recovery of 1 kg 256 grams of charas concealed in a bag hidden beneath the spare tyre in the car’s boot. The police also recovered ₹1,00,000 in cash from the same bag.
The accused has been identified as Ram Kumar (52), a resident of Kumarsain in Shimla district. During preliminary interrogation, he disclosed that he runs a roadside dhaba in the Kullu–Manali area.
Police have seized the contraband, cash, and the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt. A case (FIR No. 95/2026) has been registered at Nurpur Police Station under Sections 20 and 25 of the NDPS Act.
Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband and identify the intended recipients, police said.
