Chandigarh, February 15, 2014: As many as 300 members of Pushpac Complex, Sector 49 here took part in a Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali organized health talk on ‘How to manage lower back pain’ at Pushpac Complex today.
Addressing them, Dr Manuj Wadhwa, Director and Head, Max Elite Institute of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement said that lower back pain was a leading cause of disability. Its incidence has been increasing over the last few years, especially amongst the working class.
He said , nowadays more young patients in the age group of 15-45 years were presenting with the complaint of low back pain whereas around 75% of computer professionals from the region suffering from back discomfort courtesy lack of Vitamin D. As per recent report the Vitamin D deficiency in young was quite high at 36%, pointed out Dr. Wadhwa.
The studies observed inadequate Vitamin D level could lead to chronic back pain as it resulted in softening of bone surfaces, which was called Osteomalacia and which caused pain. We have observed that after taking Vitamin D supplements for 3 months, symptoms were improved in 95% of the patients. Extra Vitamin D was generally considered for all persons during winter months, and especially for those who have back aches and pains. Most children and adults would need at least 1000 IU per day and persons with chronic back pain would benefit from 2000 IU or more per day of supplemental vitamin D3, asserted Dr Wadhwa.
The various factors such as obesity, physical inactivity and nutrition deficiencies contributed to back pain, but work-related physical risk factors such as poor posture, prolonged sitting job and poor work habits were the commonest cause these days. Low back pain afflicted 80 percent of people at one time or another. Next to headache, it was the most common medical complaint, and next to the common cold, it was the most frequent reason for missed work. Psychosocial risk factors at work such as job dissatisfaction and perceived high work pressure also could lead to increase risk of low back pain, informed Dr Wadhwa.
Dr Wadhwa said simple lifestyle modifications such as regular exposure to sunlight and intake of  Vitamin D supplements and adding yoga and back strengthening exercises in your daily routine could alleviate the problem to a great extent. Maintaining proper posture at work, sitting up straight and making sure that your lower back was supported and office chair adjusted to the right height could help a lot. One should try to not to sit in the same position for long periods besides taking frequent short breaks as it would give the muscles a chance to relax, advised Dr Wadhwa.
