National Sports Meet at Govt. Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID)

Chandigarh, December 1, 2019: Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID) Chandigarh in association with the Swaraj Engines Limited, Mohali, Punjab, is organizing National Sports Meet for Individuals with Intellectual Disability from 1st to 3rd December. This Sports meet is being organized for providing an opportunity to special children to showcase their talents in different sports. There is no platform where these children can participate at National Level. GRIID is the state of art institute in the north and has been striving hard to make GRIID as a sports hub for Individuals with Intellectual Disability. In addition to supporting sports, GRIID is imparting comprehensive training in special education and rehabilitation to over 450 Individuals with Intellectual Disability. GRIID also provides Medical Services, Teacher Training Programme and Research Work in various areas pertaining to disability. National Sports Meet 2019 is a three days programme wherein around 300 Individuals with Intellectual Disability from 20 different institutions and representing 07 states of India are taking part in the following Sports: Cricket, Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basket Ball, Judo and Skating. The matches will be played in Panjab University Ground, PU Gymnasium Hall, Sports Ground Sector-46, 32, 10 and at different venues depending on the games. Prof. BS Chavan, The Director Principal-GMCH-32 and Director GRIID was the Chief Guest and Shri Ajay Ghai, Plant Head, Swaraj Engines Limited was guest of honour during the opening Ceremony of the three days National Sports Meet 2019. The inaugural of the Meet took place in Cricket Stadium-16. Prof. Chavan emphasized the importance of persons with intellectual disability and urged everyone to look at their strength rather than their weakness. He congratulated the players, coaches, head of the institution and parents for taking active part in such events. Shri Ajay Ghai appreciated the program and the endeavors of GRIID. The overview of the program was presented by the Joint Director GRIID, and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. R Vani Ratnam, Principal School-GRIID.
