MUSLIM inmates excused from hard labour during Ramzan in Punjab

Chandigarh, July 8, 2013: Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Jail Minister Punjab has directed the senior officers of the department to ensure adequate facilities to the Muslim prisoners during the Ramzan starting from July 9.

In a statement issued here today the Minister said that the Punjab Government was committed to promote national integration and extent due respect to every religion. He also said that the Prison authorities have also been directed to exempt Muslim prisoners from hard labour during the holy month of Ramzan.

The Minister has also asked the DGP Prisons to make sure that the directive of Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister Punjab, to allow the Muslim Prisoners perform prayers and other rituals for Ramzan, during which they observe fast. Assistant inspector general of prisons, Punjab, would co-ordinate with jail superintendents and sub-jails deputy superintendents to supervise the arrangements on a day-to-day basis, he added.
