Municipal Elections-2026- Section 163 imposed in Ludhiana ahead of polling on May 26

District Magistrate Himanshu Jain has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in view of the Municipal Elections-2026 scheduled to be held on May 26 in Punjab.

Ludhiana, May 23, 2026: District Magistrate Himanshu Jain has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in view of the Municipal Elections-2026 scheduled to be held on May 26 in Punjab.
The orders have been issued to maintain peace, law and order and safeguard public life and property during the election period.
According to the orders, gathering of five or more persons at public places, any kind of sloganeering, delivering provocative speeches, holding meetings, taking out processions and organising rallies in urban as well as rural areas of district Ludhiana have been prohibited. 
The District Magistrate stated that there is apprehension of clashes, disturbance of public peace and damage to government or private property during the election period due to unlawful gatherings and political activities. Therefore, preventive measures have been taken to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.
However, the orders will not apply to police personnel, army officials in uniform, and other government employees on duty. The restrictions will also not apply to marriage functions, condolence gatherings, religious places, religious institutions and devotional programmes including kirtan and etc. 
However, in special circumstances, organisers may seek written permission from the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate for holding public meetings or processions. Permissions will be granted in accordance with guidelines issued by the Government of India, Punjab Government, Election Commission and district administration from time to time.
These orders will remain in force from May 22 to July 21, 2026.
Commissioner of Police Ludhiana, Senior Superintendent of Police Ludhiana (Rural) and SSP Khanna will ensure strict implementation of the orders.
