Multiple activities to mark YPS Patiala's 75th foundation year

Patiala, September 6, 2022: YPS, Patiala, an iconic legacy school and one of India's most prestigious schools, is all set to celebrate its 75th foundation year.   A host of activities have been planned to mark 75 years of the school's existence, culminating into the momentous 'Foundation Celebration' in February 2023.

“A lot many activities will be conducted throughout the year as YPS Patiala enters into its 75th glorious year. A mountaineering expedition and inter-school online sessions on ‘Regional Ethnic Diversity’ among others will be held,” said Raja Malvinder Singh, Chairman of the School Board of Governors.

According to Director, Major General Sanjiv Varma, VSM (Retd), there would be an Inter- School MUN, a Girls Hockey Tournament, an Inter-School Squash Competition, an Inter-School Shooting Competition, a conclave for Heads of Schools and a gala Foundation Day programme in February 2023.

Considered one of the top schools in the country, Yadavindra Public School (YPS) was established by Maharaja Yadavindra Singh in 1948 as an educational home for the students who had to leave their school in Lahore during the partition. Whereas Aitchison College catered more to princes and scions of royal families, YPS was more democratic and secular as it accommodated students from all streams and strata of society. The school started functioning with nine teachers and 21 students on February 2, 1948. Today the school has grown its strength to 1400 plus students and 125 staff members.

The school has made a place for itself in the school education landscape of the country due to its world-class infrastructure. The school is synonymous with some very important and beloved landmarks such as The Amphitheatre, The Olympic Torch, The School Nalagarh Park and even the Prep School Swing Area. It has extensive playgrounds for all major games like Cricket, Hockey, Soccer, Swimming, Athletics, Tennis, Shooting, Horse Riding, Squash and Archery. It also has a built-in Olympic stadium and a hospital.

Major General Sanjiv Varma, VSM (Retd), said further, "An indoor auditorium and state–of–the–art squash courts are recent additions to the school facilities, while a bigger swimming pool, a fully underground shooting range, an archery range, cricket pavilion, basketball court and hockey astroturfs will soon be added."

It is noteworthy that the school is headed by Captain Amarinder Singh, former Chief Minister of Punjab as the patron, and Raja Malvinder Singh as the Chairman of the School Board of Governors. The motto of YPS Patiala is ‘Vidya, Vinay, Veerta’ , that is ‘Valour and Humility through Knowledge.’ It is a co-ed day –cum-boarding school which prepares students for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Class X) and the Indian School Certificate (Class XII) examinations conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.

YPS, Patiala, has notable alumni who are serving the country in a myriad of positions and fields ranging from politics to business to sports, defense services and philanthropy, and many more. AYOSA, the school’s old students’ association is playing a vibrant role in keeping the rich legacy and heritage of the school alive.

"The school’s ultimate aim through the activities planned will be to impart exposure and a conducive environment that contributes to the overall growth of the students", summed up Major General Sanjiv Varma, VSM(Retd).
