Chandigarh, June 25, 2025: MP from Chandigarh and former Union Minister Manish Tewari has welcomed the reform in the election process of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor, where municipal councillors will now vote by a show of hands. This was a proposal he had made after being elected as an MP last year.
In a statement issued here, he said that after the blatant subversion of democracy by the election officer Anil Masih in Chandigarh, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had jointly passed a resolution in the Municipal Corporation House demanding that the elections for the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor be conducted through the show of hands by members.
Tewari emphasized that had this demand been accepted earlier, the results would have been completely different. While the decision has come late, he welcomed it as the right step. The amendment has been made to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 1996, under which these elections will now be conducted through an open show of hands instead of secret ballot. He said this would further strengthen public faith in democracy.
