MP: Committee set up to investigate water contamination in Indore's Bhagirathpura

Indore, Jan 20 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday constituted a state-level committee to investigate the water contamination incident in Indore’s Bhagirathpura, which has led to several deaths and left nearly 500 people affected by waterborne diseases.
The committee, headed by Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Additional Chief Secretary of the General Administration Department, has been tasked with examining the actual causes and key facts behind the contamination.
The panel also includes P. Narhari, Principal Secretary of the Public Health Engineering Department, and Sanket Bhodave, Commissioner of the Directorate of Urban Administration and Development. Indore Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade has been appointed as the member‑secretary.
According to the Indore district administration, the committee will analyse administrative, technical and management deficiencies that led to the incident.
It will also determine the accountability of officers and employees responsible, make recommendations to prevent recurrence, and assess additional matters incidental to the probe.
The committee has been authorised to obtain records, reports and information from relevant departments and conduct on‑site inspections wherever necessary. It must submit its report to the state government within one month.
Officials said the health situation in Bhagirathpura has improved significantly, and water supply has resumed in 30 per cent of the area. However, residents continue to rely on water tankers for daily needs.
Indore’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, Madhav Prasad Hasani, said 17 patients remain hospitalised, including seven undergoing treatment in ICU wards.
The contamination, which came to light in the last week of December, triggered a major health crisis in Bhagirathpura.
A total of 450 people suffering from diarrhoea had been admitted to multiple hospitals, of whom 433 had been discharged by Tuesday evening.
