Mobile deposit facility for voters at polling stations: DEO Himanshu Jain

Ludhiana, June 13, 2025: To enhance voter convenience and maintain the integrity of the electoral process during the Ludhiana West by-elections, a mobile deposit facility will be available just outside each polling station on June 19 (polling day).

District Election Officer (DEO) Himanshu Jain announced that this initiative complies with the guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI), ensuring a smooth voting experience. He noted that voters will be allowed to bring mobile phones within 100 meters of a polling station only if they are switched off; however, phones cannot be taken inside the polling station in any manner. At the entrance of each polling location, there will be a deposit facility consisting of a pigeon-hole box with ten compartments or a jute bag with small pockets, which can accommodate the mobile phones of up to ten voters at a time. Typically, only four to five voters will be inside a polling station simultaneously.

Jain explained that voters must deposit their switched-off mobile phones at the facility before entering the polling station and will receive a pre-numbered token, which is pre-signed by the Booth Level Officer (BLO). After casting their votes, voters can retrieve their mobile phones by returning the token.  If a voter forgets to collect their mobile phone after voting, volunteers will hand over any unclaimed devices to the BLO after polling concludes. The BLO will then return the phone to the voter upon presentation of the token and satisfactory verification
