Ferozepur, February 26, 2015: Congress candidates failed to put up an impressive show in Ferozepur MC Elections and in most of the areas including Ferozepur City, Zira, Talwandi Bhai, Mamdot and Mudki, SAD-BJP candidates secured thumping victories while congress candidates had to face severe defeat.
In Ferozepur, leaving behind the internal strife within the party, the BJP candidates performed exceptionally well. Punjab BJP Chief Kamal Sharma and former CPS Sukhpal Singn Nannu canvassed for BJP candidates which worked wonder. Out of 30 wards (the polling in ward number 14 was adjourned), the BJP secured 19 seats while its ally SAD secured 6. The BJP had fielded candidates in 23 wards while the SAD had fielded its candidates in 8 wards. The congress, which had hardly managed to field 26 candidates, came up with no surprise and as expected, congress could win only 2 seats. Few congress heavyweights including two time sitting MC and Ex-MC President Nirmal Sahota, Bohar Singh, another sitting MC, Vijay Gill, Sitting MC could not save their seats. It is pertinent to mention here that two of Congress’s MC Amarjit Narang and Prem Rani had already shifted to BJP. However, both of them secured victories in their respective wards.
In Talwandi Bhai, the SAD-BJP and Congress candidates allegedly had a backdoor handshake. In out of 13 Wards of this MC, 5 SAD, 2 Congress and 1 BJP candidates were elected unopposed which had left the PPP candidates fuming in Talwandi. The PPP candidates were contesting in Ward Number 7, 8, 10 and 12 while one independent was in fray in ward number 11. However, the results in five remaining wards did not produce any different results. In these 5 wards SAD secured 3 seats, Congress 1 and BJP 1.
In Zira, the SAD secured victory in 11 Wards while the BJP could win only in 1 and Congress candidates won in 2 wards only. The independents also marked their presence in the Zira MC by winning 3 seats. It is pertinent to mention here that the SAD-BJP alliance was not working in Zira and SAD-BJP candidates faced each other in 8 wards.
In newly formed Mamdot MC, out of 13 wards, SAD secured victory in 7 wards, Congress won in 2 and independents secured victory in 4 wards. In Mamdot the BJP Candidates were contesting in three wards but no one could secure the victory. In total 13 wards of Mudki, BJP had not fielded any candidate while SAD secured 8 seats and the rest 5 seats were won by congress candidates. Mukdi is the only place where Congress has performed considerably well.
