Bathinda: Every year on June 8, World Brain Tumor Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the disease. In line with this global initiative, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, raises awareness by highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, common symptoms, causes, and available treatment options.
Dr Gaurav Sharma, Consultant - Neurosurgeon, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Bathinda, said, “Brain tumors can be either malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous).Brain tumors typically originate from brain tissue itself and, despite treatment with various available modalities, they carry poor Prognosis. However, unlike many other cancers, they rarely metastasize—that is, spread to other parts of the body. Benign tumors, on the other hand, usually arise from structures surrounding the brain. These can often be successfully removed through surgery and, if completely excised, generally do not recur. Some benign tumors can also be effectively treated using targeted radiotherapy, especially when diagnosed early while the tumor is still small.”
Dr. Gaurav further informed, “Brain tumors can occur at any age, from infancy to old age. As of now, no definite cause has been identified for their origin, and hence, there are no specific preventive measures. Some common symptoms include headaches that are typically worse in the early mornings, vomiting, seizures, weakness in a part of the body, and difficulty in seeing, hearing, or understanding.”
Speaking about treatment, Dr. Gaurav stated that brain tumor management involves surgical removal of the tumor to relieve pressure on surrounding structures and to obtain a biopsy for diagnosis and prognosis. This is usually followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy in cases of malignant tumors.”
Early detection, timely intervention, and awareness about brain tumors can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life for patients. On World Brain Tumor Day, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, reaffirms its commitment to advanced care and community education.
