Ludhiana, October 19, 2019: Congress national spokesperson and Anandpur Sahib MP Manish Tewari today demanded that the government of India should confer the Bharat Ratna on Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru and Saheed Udham Singh. Besides, he added, before doing that the government of India should officially declare Bhagat Singh as the Shaheed-e-Azam (the greatest martyr).
Talking to reporters along the sidelines of the ‘Youth Parliament’ organized by local students, Tewari said, the BJP government at the centre was trying to play politics in the name of Bharat Ratna and suggesting the name of VD Savarkar. He said, the move was aimed at appealing and influencing a section of voters in Maharashtra only.
“If anybody deserves the Bharat Ratna more than anyone else it is Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru and Shaheed Udham Singh”, he asserted while asking, “or do they not fit into the selective nationalist narrative of the BJP?”
Responding to the questions about the possible outcome of elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and four bye-elections in Punjab, Tewari said, Congress was performing well at all places as was evident from the huge support the party candidates were getting from the public.
About Punjab, he said, the Congress will win all the four constituencies as the Congress government led by Capt Amarinder Singh had delivered more than it had promised and half of its term was still left.
Replying to a question on Dakha bye-election, Tewari rejected the allegations of the Akali Dal that the Congress was misusing state machinery. He said, these were only the signs of their defeat.
Tewari, who has represented Ludhiana between 2009 and 2014, besides having unsuccessfully contested in 2004, said, Capt Sandeep Sandhu was the best candidate the constituency could get. He said, he has closely worked with Capt Sandhu for last 12 years. “Not just Capt Sandhu deserves Dakha, actually Dakha deserves Capt Sandhu”, he remarked.
Tewari was accompanied by local MLA Rakesh Pandey, Chairman PLIDB Pawan Dewan, PCC general secretary Gurmail Singh Pehalwan , Sunil Dutt, Satwinder Jawadi, Maninder pal Guglani and others.
