Man who injured prison van inmates gets three years

New Delhi, May 13 (IANS) A court here has sentenced a man to three years in jail for injuring under-trial prisoners inside a prison van.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Neeraj Gaur sentenced Bharat Yadav after convicting him for injuring two undertrial prisoners with a blade in a jail van.

The order was delivered Saturday and made public Tuesday.

"The convict is bound to suffer the punishment for his offence and no leniency can be shown to such an offender on hypothetical grounds," the court said.

According to prosecution, a jail van carrying undertrial prisoners was on its way from Tihar Jail to Rohini court complex March 2012. Yadav attacked Ishrar and Mehtab inside the van with a blade and injured them.

The police said Yadav kept the blade in his mouth.

The court observed Yadav was involved in heinous offences like murder and attempt to murder and, turned down his plea seeking leniency.

The court said the injuries were inflicted without any provocation and apparently to overawe other prisoners.
