Mamata critic professor alleges police harassment

Kolkata, July 17 (IANS) Economist Debashis Sarkar, a known critic of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's regime, Thursday alleged police harassment after officials came to his house claiming his car was involved in a crime.

Sarkar, a professor at the government-run Jhargram Raj College in West Midnapore district, met city police Joint Commissioner Rajiv Mishra complaining that he was needlessly harassed by police.

Sarkar, a known face in TV channels where he has consistently criticised the various follies of the Banerjee government, said he was informed by police that four-five people travelling in his car were allegedly involved in the snatching of money and mobile phones from a truck driver in Khidrpur area of south Kolkata Wednesday.

"However, my car had never gone anywhere near Khidrpur Wednesday," he said.
