Jalandhar, July 15, 2025: Lyallpur Khalsa College, a premier institution of Northern India, has earned recognition for catering to the academic and societal needs of the region. The college’s Postgraduate Department of Biotechnology — the first of its kind in Punjab, established in 2001 — has consistently maintained high academic standards, backed by a reputed faculty and state-of-the-art infrastructure. Notably, it is the only college in Punjab offering an M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology under Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU).
In a proud achievement, Lyallpur Khalsa College has now been selected and designated as an I-STEM Catalytic Center — the only college under GNDU to receive this honor.
Principal Dr. Suman Chopra expressed her delight over the recognition, stating, “We are proud to be part of this national initiative. Our institution is already at the forefront of cutting-edge research at both state and national levels. With this designation, we reaffirm our commitment to delivering a society-oriented, employment-driven curriculum across all UG and PG programs.”
Marking the occasion, the college also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Dr. Arun Dev Sharma, Coordinator of the I-STEM Catalytic Center and Dean of Research, explained the significance of this achievement. “This recognition places us at the heart of a national project spearheaded by the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and managed by IISc Bangalore. The Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering Facilities Map (I-STEM) is a national web portal aimed at promoting the sharing of research and development (R&D) facilities. The catalytic center is designed to serve as a strategic hub connecting academic institutions, research labs, start-ups, and industries within the region to encourage resource sharing, foster collaborations, and accelerate research and innovation.”
He further highlighted that Lyallpur Khalsa College was selected based on its outstanding research publications and project achievements. Through I-STEM, researchers will gain access to specialized equipment, expert guidance, and technical assistance, promoting a collaborative research ecosystem across India — particularly benefiting Punjab.
Dr. Sharma also emphasized the Government of India’s focus on encouraging students to pursue careers in research, noting that the next industrial revolution will be technology-driven. He affirmed, “With this MoU, our college is poised to reach new milestones in transformative, society-oriented research. Coupled with our advanced curriculum and research-driven approach, we are confident that Lyallpur Khalsa College will emerge as a leader in this evolving field.”
On this special occasion, Madam Balbir Kaur, President of the Governing Council, congratulated the college community on this significant achievement. Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Anand, Head of the Department of Computer Science & IT, and Dr. Palwinder Singh Bolina were also present at the event.
