Ludhiana, December 17, 2013: 58th Annual Conference of The Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOACON 2013) was recently held in Agra, where doctor from DMCH-Dr Rajnish Garg (Professor of Orthopaedics) was invited to deliver a talk on ‘Techniques of ligament repair in knee joints’.
The conference was well attended by more than 6,000 delegates from all over the world. It was an unparallel opportunity for Orthopaedicians from all over the globe to interact with the experts in the field to share and enhance knowledge on latest international research & developments in the field of Orthopaedics and to network among the peers.
In his lecture, Dr Garg said that Knee ligament injuries can be unpredictable and can affect anyone, including fit people who do a lot of sport. However, if one exercises regularly and build up the strength in the muscles of legs that help to support knee joint, this may help to reduce the chances of knee ligament injury. If a person is not used to exercising regularly, he should start gently and gradually build up the frequency and intensity of exercise. The frequent knee problem that majority of sports persons generally suffer from is a breaking of cruciate ligament, mostly anterior cruciate ligament. The surgery for reconstruction of the cruciate ligament involves the removal of the torn ends of the ligament and replacing these with a graft taken from another tendon such as the hamstring or patellar tendon. In present times, Arthroscopy is preferably done as a mode of treatment that can be used for a variety of knee joint conditions such as torn menisci, mild arthritis, loose pieces of broken cartilage in the joint, a torn or damaged anterior or posterior cruciate ligament, inflamed or damaged synovium or misalignment of the knee cap, said Dr Garg.
The expected outcome of Arthroscopy includes improved mobility and stability, immediate pain relief, and less need to take painkillers. A person can usually return to full sporting activity within a span of few weeks.
Dr Garg, who is also Secretary of Punjab Orthopaedic Association, was the only orthopaedic surgeon from the region, who was invited to deliver the lecture during the prestigious congerence. He is a pioneer in arthoscopic surgery of the joints for the patients in the state of Punjab.
Precautions for prevention of knee injury:
?  During an exercise session or if you are playing sport, make sure that you warm up at the start of your training. This increases the flow of blood to your muscles and helps to loosen up your joint movements.
?  Warming up may also help to prevent injury.
?  It is advisable for people to wear a knee brace when they are exercising or doing sporting activities.// ludhiana news online, ludhiana news in English, ludhiana news, ludhiana current news, ludhiana news live, Ludhiana breaking news, Ludhiana headlines, Ludhiana latest news, punjab news, india news, punjab news live, punjab news online, punjab news, punjab news headlines, punjab breaking news, india news, punjab news,
