PMR Department of CMC at Ludhiana organising a Paraplegia meet to generate awareness about the possibilities of paraplegia and its rehabilitation.

Ludhiana, November 21, 2013: PMR Department of CMC organised a Paraplegia meet to generate awareness about the possibilities of paraplegia and its rehabilitation.

Paraplegia is a chronic condition which leaves a person affected by it paralysed and bound to wheel chair for life. Department of physical medicine and rehabilitation have been rehabilitating many paraplegics from past 8 years, this department is the only department which is equipped in whole of Punjab to rehabilitate patients with such conditions.

The programme was inaugurated by the honorable Director Dr. Abraham G Thomas and was initiated with great success with patients who have been rehabilitated from all over the region.

Dr.Santhosh Mathangi, the organiser for the program gave an awareness speech to guide the patients who have never heard about the treatment for paraplegia. Many patients who have been successfully walking post condition shared their experience and displayed their capacity to walk without any strength in the lower extremity. Patients who were new to this scenario were amazed with the capacity others possessed even in such condition.

Occupational Therapist Dr.Navneet Singh said that CMC is a single hospital in whole region who is running these types of services in Punjab. Giving more information about the PMR Dr.Navneet said “Patients who have no idea about the treatment were amazed looking at the capacity other rehabilitated patients posses”.

PMR department has been involved in treating such patients from past 8 years and till date have been able to rehabilitate more than 600 patients.

In the programme almost 35 patients participated and amongst them was Balbir who was just married and due to the accident was paraplegic. Balbir said rehabilitation has been a life turner for him and his wife as after losing all hopes of walking he could walk.
