Ludhiana, October 5, 2013: CMC Ludhiana under the auspices of Punjab Medical council hosted the North-West ISHBT (Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Trasfusion) conference for the year 2013 on Saturday. The theme of the conference was “Closing the gap” focusing on the topic “Importance of team work in maximising patient care”.

The conference was attended by more than 250 delegates from 9 different states of India representing 29 institutions (15 from Punjab and 14 from other states).   The inauguration was unique by dignitaries and audience holding hands symbolizing “Closing the gap” between human relationships, setting aside the individual differences. Dr Abraham G Thomas, director and chief guest of the meeting said that I am glad that CMC Ludhiana has the privilege to host the Annual Conference of the North West Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and also that theme is focusing on the “Importance of team work in maximizing patient care”. Hospital is perfect example of team work in a scenario of technology and laboratory aides coming together in helping doctors and nurse to give the best of efficient services to a patient.

There were interactive sessions on leukemia, stem cell transplant, laboratory case discussions, communication skills and conflict management between health professionals.   Sessions brought out the need for such sessions in the future to be organised to close existing gap especially among the doctors and nurses.

A few patients shared their experience during this conference on how they feel doctors and nurses should communicate.

Panel discussion brought out relevant points about the medical team, motivation among the members and factors which can improve interpersonal relationships.

M Joseph John, organizing secretary and Head of Clinical Haematology and Stem cell transplant Unit, said that team work among medical profession is the need of the hour.  Patient care ultimately is a well-orchestrated symphony which should deliver comfort and joy to the end user.  Quality of health care can only be improved by focusing on team efforts and not by individual excellence. The emblem we have chosen portrays that individual fists will always leave a space which cannot be bridged and only by holding hands can we close this gap.

Deepshika Gupta, joint organizing secretary delivered the vote of thanks.
