Ludhiana administration targets zero maternal deaths with robust healthcare measures

Ludhiana, Sep 24, 2025: Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain on Wednesday chaired a meeting to steer Ludhiana towards achieving zero maternal deaths.

The meeting was also attended by Assistant Commissioner (UT) Dr. Pragati Rani and senior health department officials. The discussion centered on identifying causes of maternal mortality and enforcing robust preventive strategies to safeguard women’s lives.

Jain issued firm directives to enhance maternal healthcare. He instructed health workers to conduct daily follow-ups and regular screenings for high-risk pregnancies, ensuring meticulous monitoring of vital parameters like heart rate and blood pressure, with specialized input from DMC and CMC experts. To pinpoint preventable causes, he mandated autopsies for all maternal deaths to guide future interventions. To protect women’s health, Jain ordered the formation of teams from health and administrative departments to crack down on chemists illegally selling medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kits.

Additionally, Jain also directed unannounced inspections at Civil Hospital to verify that pregnant women receive proper guidance and care, while private hospitals referring critical cases to the Civil Hospital, where patients later died, will face scrutiny. Addressing the shortage of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers, Jain assured swift resolution to bolster healthcare delivery.

The meeting was delved deeply into maternal mortality causes and preventive measures, emphasizing better healthcare access, timely interventions, and public awareness campaigns.

Jain underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment, stating, “Achieving zero maternal deaths is our top priority. We will enforce rigorous monitoring and accountability to save lives.” These initiatives aim to fortify maternal healthcare infrastructure and ensure compliance across Ludhiana’s public and private healthcare facilities.
