Ludhiana, September 3, 2013: Lord Raj Loomba, Member of the British House of Lords and Founder-Chairman of NGO Loomba Foundation has said the Foundation had arrived at an agreement with the Punjab Government for empowerment of widows under which both the Foundation and the state government would contribute Rs. 1 crore each for the cause.
With a view to start the project from Ludhiana district, Lord Raj Loomba held a meeting with the Ludhiana deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari and other concerned officers here on Tuesday and gave this information. He told that under the first phase both the Foundation and the state government would contribute Rs. 50 lakh each.
Lord Raj Loomba said the main motive of his Foundation was to make enable widows to stand economically and socially on their feet. He added widows of the district would be imparted training in sewing under the project and sewing machines would distributed to them after completion of the training in sewing. He said after getting training in sewing widows would not only become self- dependent but also become capable of let their children get better education.
Further, he revealed that Loomba Foundation was also running the project in other states namely Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and Pondicherry, where 7,000 widows were being imparted training and further programme had been chalked out to impart training to another 3,000 women.
Speaking on the occasion, the deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari said the state government was committed of completely implementing the project. He revealed that the ADC (D) KP Brar would be the Nodal Officer for running the project in Ludhiana district. He said Brar had already identified the opening of training centers and trainers for the project, adding a target had been fixed to impart training in sewing to 2,000 needy women of the district.
