Chandigarh, November 7, 2023: Live workshop on Yarn and Textiles- Khadi-Collaboration of UIFT & VD, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies and Kshetriya Punjab Khadi Mandal, Kharar.

The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies in collaboration with the University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a live workshop on Weaving Khadi and Field visit to Kshetriya Punjab Khadi Mandal Kharar, where they not only witnessed the process of developing yarn ,weaving of khadi but also learnt different aspects of khadi. The process of making of the cotton thread to the final clothing. The live workshop was organized in collaboration with Sohan Lal Saini, Secretary & all staff of Kshetriya Punjab khadi Mandal (Khadi India) Kharar.

During the live workshop students were elaborated about different types of fabrics being developed at Kshetriya Punjab Khadi Mandal Kharar. The students were additionally shown how different yarn counts may result in a range of textiles with varying fineness and thickness. The participants were informed that Kshetriya Punjab Khadi Mandal Kharar, additionally have a capacity for making space dyed yarns, which may be used to make exquisite fabric designs. In a similar manner, printing and dyeing methods like batik and tie dye were elaborated. Participants witnessed how fabric was developed on handlooms and yarn produced on charkhas. It was enlightening to interact with the craftspeople. They participated with the artisans in spinning of yarn.

The ability of the participants to acquire various techniques and absorb the feeling of the handicrafts was the visit’s best outcome. The students also interacted with the other staff members of the Kshetriya Punjab khadi Mandal (Khadi India) Kharar. The excursion was a rich learning experience for the students who developed a thorough understanding on how Khadi is woven through small scale machines providing employment to the local residents and also, on the utility as well environment friendly nature of the fabric as doesn’t involve any water wastage. Participants were able to see how the government is making progressive efforts to support small-scale enterprises through the Ministry of Medium and Small-Scale Enterprises (MSME) is genuinely fulfilling the Gandhiji’s dream of self-reliance. Dr. Manish Sharma, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Dr. Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson UIFT & VD and Gargi, Faculty UIFT & VD organised and accompanied the students for this enriching experience.
