Mohali: Livasa Hospital, one of the region’s leading multispecialty healthcare institutions, is observing World Pneumonia Day with an awareness drive aimed at educating the community about pneumonia, its early symptoms, and the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.
Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs (alveoli), which may fill with fluid or pus, leading to cough, fever, chills, and breathing difficulties. It can affect anyone but is particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.
The theme for World Pneumonia Day 2025, “Child Survival,” Pneumonia continues to be the leading infectious cause of child deaths worldwide, making awareness and prevention vital for community health. This highlights the urgent need to protect children — who remain the most vulnerable, with the help of timely vaccination, good nutrition, clean air, and timely access to diagnosis and care.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sonal, Consultant – Pulmonology, Livasa Hospital, Mohali, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis: “Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of respiratory-related hospitalizations, especially during the winter months. Many cases become critical because patients delay seeking medical attention. Persistent cough, high fever, or breathlessness should never be ignored. Early detection and proper medical management can significantly improve recovery outcomes.”
Adding to this, Dr. Kritarth, Consultant – Pulmonary Medicine, Livasa Hospital, Mohali, said: “At Livasa, we frequently treat both bacterial and viral pneumonia, especially in patients with existing respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, or diabetes. Vaccinations, maintaining good hygiene, and prompt treatment of respiratory infections are vital steps in preventing severe pneumonia. With the right care at the right time, most cases are completely curable.”
On behalf of the hospital’s leadership, Anurag Yadav, Chief Executive Officer, Livasa Hospitals, stated: “Awareness and prevention are central to Livasa Hospital’s mission of community health. Our multidisciplinary team and advanced pulmonary care facilities ensure the highest standard of diagnosis and treatment. We are committed to saving lives through education, early intervention, and excellence in care.”
