Livasa Hospital Amritsar achieves remarkable outcome in advanced tongue cancer

Amritsar, January 30, 2026: Doctors at Livasa Hospital, Amritsar, have successfully treated an 88-year-old elderly male with advanced tongue cancer using low-cost oral metronomic chemotherapy combined with low-dose immunotherapy, offering new hope for patients who are not fit for intensive cancer treatment.
The patient, diagnosed with stage IV cancer of the tongue with lung metastasis, first reported to Livasa Hospital with severe difficulty in eating, problems with speech, right-sided headache, and excessive thick salivation. Clinical examination revealed a large, ulcerated growth on the right side of the tongue along with swollen neck lymph nodes. CT scan further confirmed spread to the lungs.
Given the patient’s advanced age and poor fitness for aggressive chemotherapy, the oncology team initiated a gentler yet effective approach, oral metronomic chemotherapy along with low-dose Nivolumab immunotherapy.
After completing four cycles of treatment, the results were encouraging. The tongue growth completely disappeared, the patient resumed a regular diet, and his speech significantly improved, leading to a marked enhancement in quality of life.
The case was managed by Dr. Amritjot Singh Randhawa, Consultant – Medical Oncology, Livasa Hospital Amritsar, who has extensive experience in treating complex cancers using personalized and evidence-based therapies.
Speaking on the outcome, Dr. Randhawa said, “This approach is especially valuable for elderly patients who cannot tolerate intensive chemotherapy. Metronomic oral therapy combined with low-dose immunotherapy can provide meaningful disease control with minimal side effects, while remaining affordable and patient-friendly.”
Anurag Yadav, CEO, Livasa Hospitals, said, “This case reflects Livasa’s commitment to bringing advanced, compassionate, and accessible cancer care to Punjab. Our teams continuously strive to adopt innovative treatment strategies that improve outcomes and quality of life for our patients, even in challenging clinical scenarios.”
