Lifestyle changes behind more vulnerability to neurological diseases

Kolkata, June 28 (IANS) Asserting that current lifestyles in urban areas increased vulnerability to neurological problems, medical experts here Saturday called for increased awareness campaigns.

Participating in a two-day seminar on neuro-intensive care at a city nursing home, neurosurgeons and neurologists said the rapid evolution of neuro-critical care has enabled a drastic reduction in fatalities in neurological diseases including brain haemorrhage.

"Because of the prevailing and constantly changing lifestyle especially in urban areas, people are now far more vulnerable to acute neurological problems, especially paralysis.

But the evolution of neurological intensive care has allowed experts to drastically cut down the fatality rate that was high in such diseases," said G K Prusty, senior consultant of the neurosurgery department of the Calcutta Medical Research Institute.

Claiming lack of information as a factor hindering progress in the field, neurologist Arabinda Mukherjee, said public awareness campaigns should be started to keep people informed about such diseases.
