LGBT Fashion Show at UIFT, PU

Chandigarh, March 26, 2019: University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development and Centre for Social Work, Panjab University to host Udaan- an LGBT Ramp WalkFashion Show to be hosted in UIFT&VD lawns onMarch 28, 2019 at 6pm Chandigarh:
Chandigarh State AIDS Prevention and Control Societies (CSACS) in collaboration with University Institute of Fashion Technology (UIFT&VD) and Centre for Social Work (CSW), Panjab University are all set to host the first ever fashion show of the LGBT community- ‘Udaan’ in the region.
The event shall be hosted at the UIFT&VD lawns on March 28, 6pm and models who will walk the ramp shall be transgender and other members of LGBT community.
“The purpose of this show is to bring the LGBT community members into the mainstream and express acceptability in the society towards them,” said Dr.PrabhdipBrar, Chairperson UIFT and ‘Udaan’ Co-ordinator. The event is being hosted as a part of CSR activity of the two university departments and outfits of leading fashion designers shall be showcased in the show.
“We do have students from LGBT community taking admission in university departments now and it is high time that we remove any kind of taboo associated with them and let them adjust naturally in the routine set-up,” added Dr.Gaurav Gaur, Assistant Professor, Centre for Social Work and Co-coordinator- ‘Udaan’.
The event is aimed to create awareness among the community at large to help them work in cohesive with the mainstream. “We have achieved legal affirmation of rights of Transgender and MSM community and this will enhance HIV service delivery among them. Now we should strive to sensitise community about the rights and health services of LGBTQ community. And event like Udaanwill go a long way in achieving this goal,” said Dr.Vanita Gupta, Project Director, Chandigarh SACS.
A total of 12 collections shall be showcased by the models by models of LGBT community.
The collections shall include those of Siddhartha Bansal, a leading Fashion Designer from New Delhi, who has lent his collections as part of the Wills India Fashion Week over 5 years is a well acclaimed designer in the world of fashion. ‘Sohni’ by SohniMakkar (Chandigarh), ‘Blush’ by AmanKaur and Nidhi Bajaj (Chandigarh), Mini Kapoor (Chandigarh), BabiGrewal (Chandigarh). The collection by Sohni, who has been designing outfits for fashion lovers from last 18 years, is titled ‘Indigo and Kashish’ it comprises of dress shirts and clamp dyed and printed using daabu technique from village Bagru in Rajasthan. Mini Kapoor’s collection is based on elegant Indian Traditional Designs.
In addition to these, the models shall also wear outfits created by alumni of UIFT&VD- KarminderKaur who shall be showcasing two collections on the ramp- one comprising an evening party collection and another comprising bohemian fashion. An interesting collection by B.Sc. 6th semester students of UIFT&VD and a Junior Research Scholar ship holder JasleenKaur shall be inspired by the concept of ‘refurbishing’ and the outfits shall be ‘best out of the worn out clothes’.
Vishipreet, a transgender studying at UIFT&VD, PU said, “I am so proud of what I am. I feel gratified to be a model and I am glad that there is more awareness and acceptance.”
