Largest Telangana Sailors Continent leaves for India International Regatta at Krishnapatnam Port

Hyderabad, December 2, 2017: Telangana, with 24 entries once again becomes the largest contingent at the India International Regatta at Krishnapatnam Port which will be preceded by the Indian Sailing Nationals.

About 250 participants from countries like Germany, UK, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Hong Kong are expected to participate.

Despite being a land locked state Telangana Sailing has grown by leaps and bounds from just the Hussain Sagar.

The Yacht Club of Hyderabad team leaves for Krishnapatnam today for a long one month stint of which 15 days will be at a coaching camp run by their Chief Coach Suheim Sheikh alongside Miguel Andrade a top International Coach arriving from Portugal.

The team consists of a record number of 14 girls and 5 boys of which Gautham Kankatla and Masti Saibaba are participating in the Laser. Masti Saibaba is the favourite given that he finished a creditable 4th at the last nationals at Bhopal and was but a point away from a podium finish.

Gautham Kankatla studying at St.Mary’s Junior College at Basheerbagh has worked hard on his fitness and looks in great shape to take on the top stalwarts from Bhopal and Chennai in the Laser Junior Class.

Indian Sailing Nationals will be held from December 21 to 25 and International Regatta from December. 27 to 31.

Stalwart and title aspirant coached at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, Durga Prasad, will be representing the Navy team from Goa this year.

The wind and wave conditions are expected to be rough and will give the young sailors an exhilarating experience on the high seas.

The Sub Junior Class is being sailed in the Optimist Class of boats and Moraganty Shrikanth from the Social Welfare School at Shivareddipet is the favourite from Telangana having finished a creditable 4th at the last Monsoon Regatta. The girls are led by the sprightly and dynamic Preethi Chandrika of Nallagutta Govt. Girls School.

Medal hopes are high given that the teams have been under high intensity fitness training for about 3 months and will be training at the venue for 20 days prior to the Nationals.

‘We are taking 9 girls from the Naavika Program for the girl sailor which is a fully funded holistic program for talented girls from amongst the dis enfranchised in Telangana. This is in addition to 8 kids from the Minority welfare and 3 from the Social Welfare schools”, said Suheim Sheikh their coach and the President of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad.
