Jalandhar, October 23, 2025: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) has launched a unique Gender Sensitisation Program aimed at creating awareness about gender issues and promoting equality. KMV is the first and only institution to introduce this initiative as a value-added program in the curriculum for Semester III undergraduate students.
The program seeks to develop a strong gender perspective and transform attitudes and behaviours positively toward gender roles and responsibilities. Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi, Principal and Director of the Women Studies Centre, who is deeply committed to the upliftment of marginalized women and communities, delivered the inaugural address. She emphasized that gender equality is a human issue, and both men and women need to be sensitized to gender concerns.
Encouraging students to believe in themselves, she inspired them to work collectively towards achieving gender equality. Prof. Dwivedi also highlighted key societal issues such as lack of equal opportunities, dowry practices, and physical as well as psychological violence. The session became even more engaging with live inputs and interactive discussions with students.
It is noteworthy that this program aims to create an environment that fosters gender sensitivity and inclusiveness. The program consists of three comprehensive modules:
Lecture Series: A set of lectures on significant gender issues delivered by senior and experienced faculty members, along with renowned doctors and lawyers from the city.
Open House Session: Chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi, this module provides a platform for students to share their views, thoughts, and experiences on gender-related topics.
Self-Defence Workshop: Focused on empowering students through practical self-defence training, this workshop aims to build confidence and self-reliance among participants.
Prof. Dwivedi lauded the efforts of Mrs. Amarpreet Khurana, Coordinator, Women Studies Centre, for the successful implementation of the program and for her dedication to promoting gender awareness across the institution.
