Kathak Lecture-Demonstrations by SPIC MACAY Bring Indian Classical Art to Government Schools Across Ludhiana

Ludhiana, August 31, 2026: The SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) is organising a series of Kathak Lecture-Demonstration sessions by renowned Kathak dancer and scholar Dr. Mansi Saxena across various government schools in Ludhiana district from 28 August to 2 September. The initiative aims to introduce students to the rich traditions of Indian classical dance and connect them with India’s diverse cultural heritage.
As part of the initiative, Kathak lecture-demonstration sessions are being conducted at GSSS Cemetery Road, GSSS Jagraon, School of Eminence (SOE), Jagraon, GSSS Mangli Nichi, and School of Eminence (SOE), Mundian Kalan. The programme is particularly focused on reaching students in government schools located in different parts of the district, including rural and relatively remote areas.
The initiative has received significant support and guidance from the Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana, Himanshu Jain, under whose leadership efforts are being made to take such enriching cultural experiences to students who may otherwise have limited opportunities to witness Indian classical art forms in person.
During the lecture-demonstrations, Dr. Mansi Saxena is introducing students to the various dimensions of Kathak, including its origin and evolution, traditions, techniques, taal, laya, expressions, hand gestures and distinctive style of presentation. Through live demonstrations and interaction with students, the different elements of the art form are being explained in a simple, engaging and accessible manner.
The sessions are designed not merely as performances but as interactive learning experiences, enabling students to understand the cultural and artistic significance of Kathak. The students are being encouraged to observe, interact and develop an appreciation for the discipline, expressions and storytelling traditions associated with Indian classical dance.
A distinctive feature of this initiative is its effort to take classical art beyond major cities and specialised cultural institutions and bring it directly to government school students. For many students, such sessions provide a valuable opportunity to experience Indian classical dance closely and understand the cultural traditions associated with it.
SPIC MACAY’s initiative is therefore an important step towards making India’s rich cultural heritage more accessible to the younger generation. By bringing artists directly into classrooms and schools, the programme seeks to nurture curiosity, cultural awareness, sensitivity and a sense of pride in India’s classical arts and traditions among students.
Through these Kathak Lecture-Demonstration sessions being held from 28 August to 2 September, Ludhiana district is taking a meaningful step towards bringing the transformative experience of art and culture to students across both urban and rural areas.
