Dharamshala, March 24, 2024: In response to its vulnerability to seismic activity, Kangra district, known for its seismic sensitivity, is ramping up disaster preparedness efforts. The region, which experienced a devastating earthquake on April 4, 1905, resulting in the loss of 20,000 lives and damage to over 100,000 buildings, remains on high alert for potential future quakes. To mitigate the risks and enhance readiness, the district administration regularly disseminates cautionary advice to its residents.

As a part of these ongoing efforts, Kangra district has announced an initiative to conduct a mock drill across all educational institutions on April 4, aiming to bolster disaster management capabilities. District Magistrate Hemraj Berwa has revealed that comprehensive guidelines for the drill have been issued to Sub-Divisional Officers, as well as to the Deputy Directors of Education covering both higher and elementary education sectors.

The emphasis of these drills is on cultivating an informed and prepared community that can effectively minimize losses in the event of an actual disaster. According to District Magistrate Berwa, disaster management has become a focal point of the district's strategy, with detailed plans developed at both the district and sub-division levels. Furthermore, schools and hospitals have been instructed to formulate their own disaster response strategies to ensure readiness at all levels.

Regular mock drills serve not only as a test of the district's disaster management plan but also as crucial training for officers and employees, equipping them to manage emergency situations effectively. Through these proactive measures, Kangra aims to safeguard its residents against the inevitable challenges posed by its seismic geography, thereby reducing potential casualties and property damage in future earthquakes.
