Kalibari presents Rabindranath Tagore’s play ‘Bisarjan’

Chandigarh, May 21, 2023: Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, in collaboration with Kalibari Chandigarh, presented Rabindranath Tagore’s play ‘Bisarjan’ at Tagore Theatre on Saturday, to commemorate his birthday.

Pramod Sen, president of the managing committee of Kalibari Chandigarh, said that Sangeet Natak Akademi had provided all sorts of help and assistance for the successful conduct of the masterpiece of Rabindranath Tagore.

The play ‘Bisarjan’ is dedicated to those brave hearts who are the champions of world peace when war is in an outcry shredded with human sacrifice. For the cause of love and nonviolence, this play epitomizes the actual value of humanity. Taking a cue from Buddhism, Rabindranath has based this play on nonviolence and love.

In the play, King Gobindmanikya is Tripura's peaceful, loving, noble, and honest king. According to age-old tradition, human and animal sacrifice was the order of the day in Tripuraswari Temple, controlled by Dharam guru Raghupati, who has a higher position than the king. He is a powerful Rajpurohit and has one adopted son Jai Singh.

In the play, there is a constant tussle between traditions and love. There is a destitute girl named Aparna, who successfully challenges the traditional values and concise of Jai Singh.

When goddess Maa Kali, in a dream, asks the king to stop the practice of sacrifice (human/animal), it all brings out the change and transforms the king. Implementing the orders of stopping animal sacrifice, there was grave resentment from many corners, the strongest being from Queen Gunwati, who was ready to sacrifice hundreds of animals to get a son.

The play culminates with the Visarjan of Devi, an external event. Still, at the same time, it indicates giving away all bad virtue in a human being and adopting love, respect, honesty, and nonviolence.

Because of the sacrifice only, Raghupati could feel the reality that love doesn’t coincide with violence.

In the end, it took a great piece of sacrifice and bearing a heavy cost, it could be realized that goddess is nowhere, but it is inside us only.
