Gwalior, April 28 (IANS) Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday inspected the Western Bypass project in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior and said it would play a key role in boosting the city's infrastructure and connectivity, officials said.

Reviewing the progress with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Union Minister stressed timely completion of the project with high quality standards.

He said that the project would help balance Gwalior's development by expanding growth towards the western part of the city.

"This project will prove to be a milestone in balancing Gwalior's development from east to west and will provide new speed and connectivity to the city," Union Minister Scindia added.

The 29-km-long Western bypass, approved in 2025, is being built at a cost of Rs 1,347 crore.

It will connect the 88-km Gwalior–Agra Expressway and will later link to the Shivpuri Expressway, improving regional transport links.

Union Minister Scindia credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving the project.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development in the Gwalior-Chambal region has gained new momentum," the Union Minister said, while also thanking Nitin Gadkari for his support.

He highlighted that the project would significantly reduce travel time.

"With improved connectivity, 88 km can be covered in about 35 minutes and 30 km in nearly 20 minutes," Union Minister Scindia said.

The bypass project will have three entry-exit points and 13 underpasses, keeping environmental concerns in mind.

Union Minister Scindia also noted that projects worth around Rs 6,500 crore are underway in Gwalior, including a Rs 1,400-crore elevated road and a Rs 5,000-crore six-lane Agra–Gwalior expressway.

"These projects will transform Gwalior's infrastructure and make it more modern and capable," he said.

He added that the expansion of the airport and railway station, along with a proposed Rs 300 crore international cricket stadium, would further boost development and employment.

"Gwalior is being developed as a counter-magnet city to Delhi, and the Western bypass will also bring rural areas into the mainstream of development," Union Minister Scindia added.
