Just the Beginning': Randhawa Says Gurdaspur Verdict Signals Major Political Shift in Punjab

Chandigarh, June 14, 2026: Senior Congress leader and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, reacting to Congress’ impressive victory in the Municipal Council elections in the Majha region, said that this is only a trailer for the 2027 battle and that the full film is yet to come.
He stated that the people of Majha have not only demolished the BJP’s urban stronghold in Gurdaspur but have also shattered the arrogance of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. According to him, the people have reminded both AAP and the BJP of their true political standing. He described the verdict as historic and one that would have far-reaching implications for Punjab politics. He cautioned against treating these elections as ordinary local body polls.
Randhawa strongly warned both the BJP and AAP, asserting that Majha belonged to Congress in the past, belongs to Congress today, and will continue to belong to Congress in the future. He said the people of Majha had delivered their verdict. According to him, Majha is not merely a region but the political pulse of Punjab, and today that pulse is beating in favor of Congress.
He further stated that the results from Dinanagar, Gurdaspur, Qadian, and other urban areas of Majha clearly demonstrate that urban voters are no longer influenced by the politics of AAP and the BJP. He added that the land of Majha continues to determine the political direction of Punjab, and whenever Majha speaks, its voice echoes across the entire state.
Randhawa said that the BJP had long projected Gurdaspur as its political bastion. Despite years of power at the Centre, prominent ministers, parliamentary representation, and governmental influence, the people of Gurdaspur have now delivered a clear message that politics cannot succeed in Punjab without understanding its soul. He remarked that the very fort which the BJP claimed as its stronghold has now been brought down by the people’s votes. He claimed that the BJP was zero in Punjab before, is zero today, and will remain zero in the future.
Randhawa also said that the people of Majha and Punjabis are prepared to teach a lesson to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and to assess their political momentum. He said AAP should view these results as a warning. The hopes with which people gave the party an opportunity in 2022 are now turning into disappointment.
He claimed that youth are troubled by unemployment, farmers are worried, employees are protesting on the streets, traders feel insecure, and ordinary families are struggling with inflation. According to him, all these sentiments were clearly reflected in the election results of Majha.
He concluded by saying that the Bhagwant Mann government must understand that the voice emerging from Majha is not merely the voice of one region. Rather, it reflects the growing unrest, disappointment, and desire for change among the people of Punjab. What Majha has demonstrated today, he said, is only a trailer; in 2027, the people of Punjab will show the full film.
