This historic day ‘Vijay Diwas’ being celebrated at Jalandhar on Monday.
Jalandhar , December 16, 2013: 16 Dec 1971 was a historic day for the Indian Armed Forces, when 93000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered to the Indian Army consequent to the liberation of Bangladesh, the erstwhile East Pakistan. This historic day is celebrated as ‘Vijay Diwas’ every year. A large number of functions were held all over Punjab, with the main function being organised at Jalandhar, which was presided over by Lt Gen AK Bakshi, General Officer Commanding, Vajra Corps. This was attended by a large number of senior army officers, civil dignitaries, retired officers and veterans of the 1971 war.
Vijay Diwas commemorates the finest hour of the Indian Armed Forces, which came about with the triumph in the 1971 war. This historic victory signifies a unique and unparalleled feat wherein our forces fought selflessly for a just and noble cause to liberate the people of Bangladesh. The Vajra Corps proved its mettle on the strategic Western Front and achieved its objectives with elan and vigour. 8 Maha Vir Chakras and 47 Vir Chakras were awarded to the valiant men of the Vajra Corps. The Vajra Corps during the war was also bestowed with the Theatre Honour : Punjab and Battle Honours : Sehjra and Dera Baba Nanak.
Lt Gen AK Bakshi, General Officer Commanding Vajra Corps, Veterans of the 1971 war and other senior serving, retired officers, JCOs and OR paid homage and tributes to the Martyrs at the Vajra Corps War Memorial.
