International Microorganism Day Celebrated at Department of Microbiology, Panjab University

Chandigarh, September 21, 2025: The Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, celebrated International Microorganism Day from 17th to 19th September 2025 with the theme “To recognize microorganisms as foundation of life.” The three-day event began with an interactive session on the importance of microbiology, followed by networking opportunities between faculty, scientists, research scholars and general public. Students from different colleges across Chandigarh enthusiastically participated in the program, showcasing their creativity and scientific spirit through vibrant competitions such as rangoli making, poster making, agar art, and glassware painting.
Eminent scientists, including Dr. Rajesh Sani (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, USA) and Dr. Sanjeev Bhardwaj (McGill University, Canada) interacted with students, highlighting recent advances in microbial science and exploring future opportunities in microbiology for a sustainable tomorrow. The event concluded with networking sessions over tea, and awards worth Rs. 5000/-, sponsored by the Academy of Microbiological Sciences (AMI), were presented to the winners of the competitions.
Prof. Naveen Gupta, Chairperson, Department of Microbiology, emphasized the importance of International Microorganism Day and elaborated on the invaluable roles of microbes in food, health, environment, and climate resilience, stressing the need to wisely utilize microorganisms for a sustainable and healthier planet.
Prof. Prince Sharma, Department of Microbiology, coordinated the three-day event and acknowledged the indispensable role of microorganisms in every sector, highlighted the importance of the responsible use of antibiotics to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), leaving students more conscious of microbes as invisible yet indispensable allies of life.
