With the wheat procurement season crossed more than half way mark, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma directed the officials to further expedite the lifting and transportation of golden grains from the grain markets of Ludhiana at the earliest.

Reviewing the ongoing wheat procurement, Deputy Commissioner said that around 9 lakh metric ton of wheat was expected to be arrived in all the grain markets during the current Rabi procurement season.

He said till Thursday, 5.6 lakh metric ton of wheat had been procured in the various grain markets

Sharma further said that so far payment worth Rs 453.51 crore had been made to the farmers.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner said that the lifting of the wheat was being within 48 hours of its purchase during the ongoing Rabi procurement season.

He said that the district administration had made elaborate arrangements in this regard to ensure that farmers do not face any sort of inconvenience.

Keeping in view of the prevailing situation arising out of Covid-19 pandemic, the administration had already made 124 additional purchase centres in district along with existing 108 to minimize the crowd in the grain markets.

Further, social distancing was maintained in the grain markets during the procurement of grains besides facilities of masks, soaps and hand washing were also ensured to the farmers, labourers and others.

Sharma said that the heads of the procurement agencies have been regularly monitoring the procurement operations in the district to ensure that every single grain of golden harvest of the farmers in the grain markets across the district gets procured.
