IIT Roorkee Strengthens Partnership with Government of Uttar Pradesh to Advance Carbon Credits for Sustainable Agriculture

Roorkee, Uttarakhand, September 9, 2026: In a significant step towards advancing climate-smart agriculture and strengthening sustainable development, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has signed two Tripartite Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP) and two industry partners - Compliance Kart Pvt. Ltd. and Trayambhu Tech Solutions Pvt. Ltd. - for collaboration under the programme “Carbon Credits Initiation and Its Benefits for Sustainable Agriculture in Uttar Pradesh.” The programme is structured as a Public–Private–Academic Partnership (PPAP/PPP) and is being implemented under the Government of Uttar Pradesh's approved framework.
Together, the two MoUs strengthen the programme's implementation framework by bringing government policy, IIT Roorkee’s scientific and technical expertise, and industry capabilities onto a common platform to develop a transparent, credible, and farmer-centric carbon-credit ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh.
The initiative is designed to promote climate-smart and regenerative agriculture, enhance soil organic carbon, conserve water, improve irrigation efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support agroforestry and biodiversity, and create opportunities for farmers to participate in emerging carbon finance and carbon market mechanisms.
T. M. Tripathi, Director, Agriculture & Allied Services, Government of Uttar Pradesh, said, “This partnership marks an important step towards integrating sustainable agricultural practices with emerging carbon markets in Uttar Pradesh. By bringing together government, academia and industry, the initiative will help create new opportunities for farmers while strengthening climate resilience, sustainable resource management and environmentally responsible agricultural development across the State.”
Alok Pandey,CEO, Compliance Kart Pvt. Ltd., said, “We are pleased to collaborate with IIT Roorkee and the Government of Uttar Pradesh in building a technology-enabled carbon-credit ecosystem for sustainable agriculture. The partnership provides an opportunity to connect climate action, scientific rigour and implementation at the grassroots while creating greater value and participation for farmers.”
Prabir Mishra, CEO, M/s Trayambhu Tech Solutions Pvt. Ltd., said, “The partnership provides an opportunity to combine technology, scientific expertise and field-level implementation to support sustainable agricultural practices and strengthen the participation of farmers in the emerging carbon-credit ecosystem.”
Commenting on the collaboration, Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, “IIT Roorkee is committed to translating scientific knowledge and technological innovation into solutions that deliver meaningful societal and environmental impact. These partnerships bring together government, academia and industry to build a credible and robust carbon-credit ecosystem that can promote sustainable agriculture, enhance climate resilience and create new economic opportunities for farmers.”
Under the framework, IIT Roorkee will serve as the Technical and Scientific Nodal Agency, contributing to scientific methodologies, the review of Project Design Documents and monitoring systems, the supervision of the Digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (D-MRV) framework, scientific evaluation, quality review, capacity building, research, and technical coordination.
The programme envisages the use of satellite integration, GIS mapping, GPS-enabled field systems, mobile applications, IoT, digital audit trails and transparency dashboards to strengthen monitoring, traceability and transparency.
The collaboration has been closely coordinated by the IIT Roorkee team, with Prof. Vivek Kumar Malik, Dean, Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), providing institutional and strategic oversight, and Dr. A. S. Maurya, Nodal Officer/Authorised Signatory, contributing to the technical and scientific coordination of the initiative. Their efforts have supported the convergence of IIT Roorkee’s expertise in scientific validation, digital monitoring, research, and technology with the programme's implementation framework.
The initiative will initially cover Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli, covering more than five lakh hectares, with potential expansion to other agro-climatic zones of Uttar Pradesh, subject to the requisite approvals and performance assessment. The programme is aligned with India's evolving Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) and recognises applicable national and international carbon market standards, including Verra VCS, Gold Standard, and compatible frameworks. By linking scientific research, digital technologies, sustainable farming practices and carbon finance, the initiative seeks to create a pathway from local agricultural action to participation in the wider national and global climate economy. Its farmer-centric approach emphasises transparent benefit-sharing, climate resilience, and sustainable rural development.
The MoUs provide an initial five-year framework and envisage structured implementation through coordination mechanisms, baseline planning, project-specific agreements, D-MRV deployment and farmer onboarding.
Through these partnerships, IIT Roorkee continues to advance its commitment to translating research and innovation into scalable solutions for climate action, sustainable agriculture and inclusive development, while contributing to India’s growing engagement with the global carbon economy.
