IIT Roorkee Develops and Transfers Advanced Test Stand for Measuring Flammable Liquid Burning Rates Tech to Swan Environmental Pvt. Ltd.

Roorkee, Uttarakhand, November 27, 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has successfully transferred a novel technology titled “A Novel Test Stand and Method to Measure the Burning Rate of Flammable Liquids” to Swan Environmental Pvt. Ltd., a leading environmental monitoring solutions company based in Hyderabad.

Developed by Prof. K. B. Mishra and Mr Ankit Sharma of IIT Roorkee, the invention provides a new test system and method for correctly measuring the maximum burning rates of flammable liquids. This indigenously developed system ensures that realistic boundary conditions are maintained during the testing process, thereby allowing more precise measurement of burning rates as they would occur in real-sized storage tanks. This innovation will significantly improve industrial safety standards by helping determine proper safety distances from fires, reducing potential losses to people and infrastructure.

Prof. K. B. Mishra, Inventor, IIT Roorkee, said, “Our motivation behind this invention was to address a long-standing gap in correctly measuring the burning behaviour of flammable liquids and gases under realistic conditions. This test stand will help authorities and industries develop safer operational protocols and enhance fire safety engineering practices.”

Vijay Kumar Chadalavada, Managing Director, Swan Environmental Pvt. Ltd., remarked, “We are pleased to partner with IIT Roorkee for this advanced testing technology. The invention aligns with Swan’s mission of offering cutting-edge environmental and safety solutions. We are confident this technology will strengthen our industrial safety and hazard assessment capabilities.”

Prof. Vivek Kumar Malik, Dean (Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy), IIT Roorkee, stated, “This technology transfer reflects IIT Roorkee’s strong commitment to bridging the gap between academic research and industrial implementation. We are glad to see such impactful innovations finding their way to the market where they can enhance safety and sustainability.”

Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, “At IIT Roorkee, we proudly contribute to India’s innovation ecosystem through technologies that address real-world industrial and societal challenges. Collaborations like this underscore our focus on translational research and strengthening academia-industry partnerships.”
