Kilaraipur (Ludhiana), February 3, 2014: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari has given a clarion call for eradicating the scourge of drug addiction from Punjab. He was addressing the concluding function of the Kilaraipur Sports Festival, also known as "Rural Olympics" here on Sunday evening.
Congratulating the organisers of the games for the spectacular event, Tewari recalled that he has been following the Kilaraipur games for a long time. “Wherever I have been I have keenly followed these games with a strong sense of nostalgia”, Tewari told a jam packed stadium. He also announced Rs ten lakhs for improving the games infrastructure and Rs five lakhs for the village development from his discretionary fund.
Last year also Tewari had provided Rs 15 lakhs from his discretionary grants for the stadium. He inaugurated the office complex of the games which was constructed from the money he provided last year.
He said, the Kilaraipur games had not only become famous across the country, but had become known world over for the sheer uniqueness and the unmatched display of inborn talent. Watching the people belonging to all ages perform various feats, Tewari said, mkes every Punjabi feel proud about the robustness and the fighting spirit.
However he regretted, this robustness was being threatened by the scourge of drugs. Asserting that such talent needed to be supported and encouraged, he said, there is no reason that the sportspersons and athletes coming from Punjab cannot perform at the international events.
The Minister said, such occasions and sports festivals also inspire the youth to perform better. Such activities can also act as a deterrent against the dangerous temptations like the drug addiction a number of youth have been falling prey to.
Speaking on the occasion, former MLA Jassi Khangura said, it was a matter of great pride for the people of Punjab in general and the Kilaraipur area in particular that these games had made the place famous all over the world.
Besides, Khangura added, these games provided an occasion to the people to show their talent to the world. He recalled that when he was young and staying in London, all the leading papers of England used to carry the photographs of the games on the front page.// ludhiana news online, ludhiana news in English, ludhiana news, ludhiana current news, ludhiana news live, Ludhiana breaking news, Ludhiana headlines, Ludhiana latest news, punjab news, india news, punjab news live, punjab news online, punjab news, punjab news headlines, punjab breaking news, india news, punjab news,
