Hyperpigmentation is a very harmless condition but can cause serious self- consciousness and low confidence in an individual. Out of the total patients, I see hyperpigmentation as the most common skin condition.

Many of us struggle with an uneven skin tone or discolouration on our face. To counter it, we feed our skin with creams and treatments left right & centre to no avail? This is probably because most of us are unaware of the cause of our hyperpigmentation. One may do all  one can for one's skin and still see no difference or it comes back after some time. Discolouration due to hyperpigmentation can stem from many reasons.

What is Hyperpigmentation & Why does it occur?
Dermatologists refer to patches of skin that become darker than surrounding areas of skin as hyperpigmentation. When the skin creates more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, hyperpigmentation occurs. As a result, spots or patches of skin may appear darker than surrounding areas. Pigmentation can appear in small patches, spread across large areas, or affect the entire body,” explains Dr Sukh. “Some types of hyperpigmentation, such as melasma and sun spots, are more likely to affect areas of skin that are exposed to sunlight, such as the face, arms, and legs. Other types of hyperpigmentation develop as a result of a hormonal cause, skin inflammation, after cuts, burns, acne or lupus or even after a skin treatment. This can happen anywhere on the body.
Hyperpigmentation is a very tough condition to treat and doctors globally find it very challenging.
With advancing medicine various treatment modalities are available for the treatment of hyperpigmentation like lasers, lights, chemical peels, sun protection.
One needs to be patient in approaching treatment for this condition as it takes few sittings plus work on part of the doctor and the individual both.
