Rohtak, July 10, 2026: The Haryana Union of Working Journalists (HUWJ) has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to organise a special workshop for media professionals on the election process and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying the initiative would help journalists provide accurate information and counter misinformation.

In a memorandum addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, HUWJ president Manmohan Kathuria said the SIR exercise had generated widespread discussion and confusion across social media and other platforms.

“The media, regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy, has a crucial responsibility in ensuring that citizens receive authentic and fact-based information. Media persons will be able to perform this role more effectively if they are provided detailed and official information on the Election Commission's procedures, the methodology of the SIR exercise, voter list revision, election rules and other statutory provisions,” Kathuria said.

The HUWJ proposed that the ECI organise a dedicated orientation programme for media representatives, where senior officials could explain various aspects of the SIR exercise and respond to queries raised by journalists.

The HUWJ said such a workshop would strengthen the media's ability to disseminate verified information, enhance public awareness of the electoral process and help curb the spread of misinformation.
