Highlights of Jute Industry ( To go with: Jute industry needs modernisation to stay afloat: Jute Commissioner)

* As on April 1, 2014, there are 215,000 workers directly employed in the industry and 150,000 are employed indirectly. It is estimated that about four million farm families are involved with the cultivation of jute.

*In 2013-14 total production of raw jute was 11,416.4 thousand bales (1 bale 180 kg), that translates to about 2.05 lakh MT and that of jute goods was about 15.3 lakh MT. The production trend for both the raw jute and jute goods has not shown much change in the last three years.

*Total export in the April to December 2013 that year was about 1.3 lakh MT, its valued at Rs.1,593.6 crore.

*Total exports in 2011-12 and 2012-13 were 2.11 lakh MT valued at Rs.2,094.9 crore and 1.85 lakh MT valued at Rs.1,991.8 crore, respectively

*Major importing countries include the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Egypt and Turkey.
