Heart disease gains alarming proportions: Dr Harinder Singh Bedi
Hoshiarpur, September 15, 2019: “Heart disease has reached alarming epidemic proportions in India. According to the WHO there are 50 million heart disease patients in India and it will soon double to 100 million. Thus this will be 60% of the world’s heart patients. 4 Indians die of heart attack every minute. In Delhi the number of heart disease patients is 31 per 1000 – in Punjab it is about double this.” Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Director of Cardiology stated this during a press conference at Ivy Hospital here. He further said that India was now the diabetes capital of the world. 50% of his bypass surgery patients are diabetics. They constitute a difficult subset as they have a higher propensity for complications. However if surgery is not done when indicated they can have a bad outcome. Bypass surgery done with proper precautions and with the appropriate arterial grafts has excellent results, he said. In detail some of the finer points’ surgery which can lead to a good long term outcome, he informed. He also explained about the latest techniques including endovascular and minimally invasive techniques for cardiac, vascular and thoracic diseases. Meanwhile, Dr Bedi is one of the senior most heart surgeons of India and has a special expertise in bypass surgery. In fact he is credited with one of the world’s first series of multi vessel beating heart surgery with post op check angios. This was published in the most reputed journal – the Annals of Thoracic Surgery – and was also presented by Dr Bedi at various National and International meetings.
