Rohtak/Chandigarh, September 13, 2026: Haryana’s Bhavika Saini has earned international recognition with her selection for a prestigious four-year structured PhD programme in the UK, where she will research the scientific aspects of PM2.5 and air pollution.

Daughter of senior journalist Manbir Saini, Bhavika is the youngest among the 20 research scholars selected for the programme. She is also reportedly the only research scholar selected from South Asia and India.

Her research will focus on understanding the impact of air pollution and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on human health and the environment. PM2.5 particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the respiratory system and are linked to serious health risks.

As part of the programme, Bhavika will work with expert researchers associated with the University of Birmingham and the University of Bristol. The structured four-year programme will provide her exposure to advanced scientific methods, international research practices and multidisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges.

Bhavika reached Birmingham on Friday and will formally begin her research journey on Monday. Her achievement has brought pride to her family and the Rohtak community.

Academic journey

Bhavika completed her BS-MS in Earth and Environmental Sciences from IISER Bhopal in July this year. During her studies, she developed a keen interest in environmental and earth sciences. Her academic journey also included research on marine life at the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, giving her a broader foundation in earth, environmental and marine sciences.
