Gunjeet Ruchi Bawa Marks Literacy Day with 1200 Students at Govt High School Dhandari Kalan
On the occasion of International Literacy Day, Vice Chairperson of the Punjab Child Rights Commission Gunjeet Ruchi Bawa visited Government High School, Dhandari Kalan, under the ‘Nanhe Kadam’ initiative and interacted with around 1200 students, focusing on the importance of education, child rights, personal safety and access to help.

Ludhiana, September 9, 2026: On the occasion of International Literacy Day, Vice Chairperson of the Punjab Child Rights Commission Gunjeet Ruchi Bawa visited Government High School, Dhandari Kalan, under the ‘Nanhe Kadam’ initiative and interacted with around 1200 students, focusing on the importance of education, child rights, personal safety and access to help.
During the interaction, Gunjeet Ruchi Bawa encouraged students to see literacy as more than the ability to read and write, stressing that true education also empowers children to understand their rights, recognise unsafe situations and speak up when they face abuse, harassment or neglect. She also sensitised students about Child Helpline 1098, explaining that children can seek assistance and support whenever they feel unsafe or need help.
Addressing the students, Bawa said, “Literacy gives a child the ability to read the world, but awareness gives them the confidence to navigate it. Every child must know that education and rights go hand in hand. When children know their rights and understand where to seek help, they become more confident, aware and empowered.”
She appreciated the school authorities and teachers for their role in nurturing responsible and informed young citizens.
Deputy District Education Officer (Secondary) Amandeep Singh, along with School Headmistress Navninder Kaur and members of the school staff, were present during the programme.
As a gesture of support for the students appearing in the upcoming examinations, Aas Ehsaas NGO distributed writing boards and pens among the students and extended its best wishes for their exams and future success.
